Relational Recovery

Relational Recovery

Relational Recovery fills another longstanding void; that is, the lack of a relationship guide or handbook that can empower others to create healthy, intimate, emotionally nourishing relationships. Relational is tailored for those on a path of what is soon to be referred to as ‘relational recovery.’

Relational Recovery
identifies basic principles, concepts and pitfalls combined with requisite communication skills involved in the creation of emotionally nourishing relationships. What we see when the requisite experience or understanding is lacking is the re-enactment of longstanding dysfunctional patterns consistent with their prior experience in relationships.

To Relieve the Pain, Demystifying Addiction

Demystifying Addiction presents a Relational model, picking up where the Medical model left off. The disease was defined as a ‘pathological dependence,’ but was never viewed in terms of being a (pathological) relationship, or as the result of non-emotionally nourishing relationships. The “pathological dependency” is a pathological relationship, one in which there is a beginning, progressive emotional involvement and a synergistic interplay between dependence and denial.

It accounts for etiology, identifies pre-existing conditions, brings forth a phenomenological or experiential perspective, all of which have profound treatment implications.

Diagnosing Addiction

Diagnosing Addiction

Diagnosing presents a fresh, new approach for doing assessments to determine whether an addiction exists. We're expanding on the standard medical model approach that relies solely and entirely on objective criteria by including 'subjective' criteria, i.e. manifestations of denial, to make a 'subjective' diagnosis. Contrary to the Medical Model, subjective criteria can be as reliable and valid as objective criteria.

The underlying rationale for a strategy that involves looking for and identifying manifestations of denial is: Wherever there is denial, there is dependency, a rationale based on the Relational Model of Addiction developed by Daniel Linder.

A transcript of a session with a marijuana addicted patient is taken apart. Various types of manifestations of denial are identified and how to interpret them are discussed.

Revisiting Stigma: The Game of Appearances eBook

Diagnosing Addiction

Revisiting Stigma: The Game of Appearances revisits how stigma still, despite awareness about its existence and its effects, dictates how we behave in a variety of situations. Taking excerpts from the play, Night Mother, which uses epilepsy as a case in point, we will see how stigma works as a weapon that punishes any deviation from the established standards of desirability, that forces people to misrepresent themselves and hide their problems. Professionals who have either lost sight of, or underestimate the multitude of overpowering, far-reaching, shame inducing effects of stigma are at risk of counter-transference issues that can undermine treatment. We know that clinicians are human beings, not impervious to social conditioning.
